Today I wanted to share my experience of the second day of being in Berlin. I definitely got to experience the city better on the second day as I had the whole day to myself to just see all the beautiful landmarks and attractions. Seeing all the beauty around me, and hearing the stories behind the history of some of the buildings was very fascinating but also very overwhelming. There is a lot to see in Germany, some of the attractions are very lively however on the otherhand some monuments can hold deep meaning behind them. Nevertheless I loved learning about both, as it is what makes the city very unique. When in a large city such as Berlin it is very important to observe all that is around you as you may miss something you could learn a lot from and I defiantly learned a lot from this day.
Our first destination was the Pariser platz, which was extremely beautiful. Here lies the very famous Bradenburg gates which look even more breath-taking at night.
On our tour we also visited the modern day tax office and I know what your thinking, a TAX OFFICE that doesn’t sound too exciting. But actually there is a deep history behind the tax office and there were murals to showcase the idea of communism and the actual reality of it, it was just fascinating to see the contrast that was being presented. On the wall it showed a happy society where everyone was smiling but on the floor it showed the reality of the situation in Berlin with people protesting. The building was built and used by the Nazis. I know a lot of people may find it strange and maybe insensitive to use a Nazi building as a government building now, however our tour guide explained to us how many of the Nazi buildings are still in use today by the German government as a reminder to them of all the horrible things that occurred and the corruption that took place. This really blew my mind, as I never realised how amazing that was as many of the politicians will stray away from greed and corruption as they are constantly reminded of their counties dark past.
The next stop on our tour was the memorial built for all the murdered Jews of Europe. While walking through the memorial you cannot help but to think how much of a truly artistic beauty it is. The walls get bigger and bigger as you walk through and all you can see is the light at the end. The sunlight also bounced off the walls in a very beautiful way. I personally found the memorial to be an amazing way to honour all the innocent Jews who were killed.
Right besides the memorial was the mark of Hitler’s old bunker, when we got there we didn’t know what we were meant to see there was nothing there but a empty parking lot (which was pretty creepy). However our tour guide told us how they didn’t want to honour Hitler in anyway at all therefore the German government decided to build a car park above the grounds where Hitler lived and died so it would seem meaningless.
After three hours of walking and visiting places such as the Berlin wall and Checkpoint Charlie we finally ended up in the museum island where we ended our tour. This was one of the most fascinating squares in Berlin that I got to see as there was so much going on all around and so much to see. The place was filled with beautiful architectures and memorials.
After our tour ended we decided to check out the local market and see a little bit more of the city.
During the evening one of my friends really wanted to go see one of the castles called the Charlottenburg Castle. It was an absolutely amazing and peaceful place. It was far from the main city area but was very diverse from the rest of berlin. Walking through the park and observing all the scenery was very relaxing and really made me feel happy.
